This is for you if

  • Your monthly bill is large enough that the slab rate is hurting

    Protected-slab consumers save relatively little per unit. The households where solar transforms a bill are the ones already paying the higher slabs.

  • Somebody is home during the day, or you run cooling through the afternoon

    Under net billing the units that pay are the ones you consume as you generate them. An empty house between 9am and 5pm exports most of its generation at roughly a third of the old rate.

  • You own the house

    The payback runs over years, and the array does not come with you.

  • You want to know what the equipment cost

    You get the original supplier invoices. On a domestic job this is unusual enough that most clients ask me twice whether I mean it.

This is not for you if

  • Small systems under roughly 20 kW where you are happy with a competent installer. Four percent of a small domestic job does not cover the engineering time it deserves — so I will either say so upfront or point you to an installer I trust, rather than take the work and under-serve it.

  • Houses that are empty all day with no cooling load and no intention of shifting anything into daylight. The generation goes to the grid at the buyback rate and the payback stretches.

  • Anyone chasing the lowest price per watt. That market is well served and I am not competing in it.

  • Homes outside Lahore and its surrounding cities, for domestic work specifically. Industrial and commercial work I take across Pakistan; domestic I keep close, because after-sales that requires a five-hour drive is after-sales you will not actually get.

Let me start with the part most solar companies leave out. A consultancy fee of 4% on a 15 kW domestic system is a small number, and the engineering that system deserves — a proper load review, a shading study, a correctly specified DC side, real earthing — takes the same care as a much larger job. Below roughly 20 kW the arithmetic of my own model gets thin.

I would rather tell you that than take the work and quietly do less of it. So on a small domestic enquiry I will either say plainly that the fee does not cover what the job needs, or point you to an installer I trust. Where a house is large enough — or where the owner specifically wants engineering oversight and invoice transparency rather than the cheapest install — the model works well.

The empty-house problem nobody mentions

A great deal of domestic solar in Lahore is sold to households that are out all day. Under net metering that was fine — exported units offset imported ones at close to parity, so the grid acted as a battery. Since February 2026 it does not: exported units are bought back at roughly a third of the old rate.

If your house is empty from 9am to 5pm and your consumption is evening air conditioning, a large array now exports most of what it makes cheaply and buys it back expensively. The system still saves you money. It saves considerably less than the same system saved in 2025, and considerably less than a quotation using pre-February arithmetic will tell you.

What gets quietly cut from domestic quotations

Domestic is where corner-cutting is least visible and most common, because nobody inspects a roof after the array is on it and none of it affects day-one generation. It affects year-eight generation, and whether the array is still up after a storm.

  • Earthing and lightning protection — omitted entirely on a startling proportion of domestic quotations.
  • DC cable cross-section — undersized cable costs you output every day for twenty years and is invisible in a quotation.
  • Structure material and gauge — painted mild steel instead of properly treated section is a rust problem you meet in year six.
  • Waterproofing detail at every roof penetration — the single most common cause of a homeowner regretting the installation.
  • DC isolators and surge protection — the components that decide whether a fault is a service call or a fire.

None of these are expensive relative to the system. All of them are easy to leave out of a fixed-price quotation to win a bid on the headline number.

Do you need a battery?

Usually not, and I will say so. Under net billing the arbitrage case — store a unit rather than export it, use it in the evening — sounds compelling and frequently does not cover the cost of the storage over its cycle life. Where a battery earns its place in a home is where outages genuinely cost you something, or where the evening load is large and shifting it is impossible. Where storage is specified it is LiFePO4 only, from Dyness or Pylontech.

What clients ask before they commit

What size solar system does a house in Lahore need?
It is set by your daytime consumption rather than by house size. The starting point is twelve months of bills and your sanctioned load. A household with someone home through the day and heavy afternoon cooling justifies considerably more capacity than an identical house that is empty until 6pm — because under net billing the units that pay are the ones you use as you generate them.
Is a small domestic solar system worth hiring a consultant for?
Often it is not, and I will tell you straight. Four percent of a small domestic job does not cover the engineering time that job deserves, so below roughly 20 kW I will either say so upfront or point you to an installer I trust rather than take the work and under-serve it. Where owners still want me involved it is usually because they want the invoice transparency and the engineering oversight specifically.
How long does a home solar installation take?
Usually two to four weeks from order to commissioning. The net metering application with your distribution company runs alongside and can add several weeks on its own, so the system is often generating before the meter is changed.
Do solar panels work during load shedding?
A standard grid-tied system does not — it shuts down when the grid goes down, by design and by regulation, so that it cannot energise a line an engineer may be working on. Backup during an outage requires either a hybrid inverter with storage or a changeover arrangement. If outage backup is what you actually want, say so at the start, because it changes the inverter specification rather than being added later.
Which panels and inverters do you specify for homes?
It depends on the roof, not on a brand preference. On most Lahore rooftops a flush-mounted array over a dark surface makes bifacial modules poor value, so I specify monofacial N-Type where the budget allows — the lower temperature coefficient matters in Punjab summers. Inverters are typically GoodWe or Huawei at domestic scale, chosen for local service presence, because a warranty with no serviceable presence in Pakistan is a warranty you will spend on shipping.
Do you work outside Lahore for domestic projects?
Rarely, and deliberately. Industrial and commercial work I take across Pakistan. Domestic work I keep to Lahore and the cities around it, because the after-sales promise on this site is that the engineer who commissioned your system answers the phone and comes back — and that stops being true at a five-hour drive.
