How to get solar installed in Pakistan when you live abroad

Overseas owners lose money at the same three points every time. What to verify, what to never delegate to family, and what to insist on in writing.

A large share of the enquiries I get come from people who are not in Pakistan. An owner in Dubai, Manchester or Toronto is building or upgrading a house in Lahore, or has inherited a factory, and wants solar on it. They cannot be here, and they know the project will be run by someone on a phone call at an awkward hour.

The money almost always leaks at the same three points, and none of them is the headline price. Here they are, in the order they occur.

1. Substitution between the quotation and the roof

This is the big one. You approve a quotation specifying a particular module and inverter. What arrives on site is a different model with the same headline wattage, or the same module from a different production line, or a structure in a lighter gauge than specified. The installation looks identical when finished. It performs differently for twenty years.

Catching it requires someone technical physically present when the delivery arrives, checking model numbers and serial numbers against the invoice. That is a one-hour job and it cannot be done from another country, from a photograph, or by a relative who does not know what a datasheet says.

2. Asking a relative to supervise

This is the most common arrangement and the one I would most strongly discourage. It puts a family member in the position of policing a contractor on your behalf, with no technical basis for the judgements and no authority to stop the work — and when something goes wrong, the disagreement is with your brother-in-law rather than with a supplier.

It also does not work on the merits. Supervision of a solar installation means knowing whether the DC cable is the specified cross-section, whether the terminations are properly torqued, whether earthing has actually been installed rather than described. A non-technical observer standing on a roof cannot tell you any of that, however diligent they are.

Use family for what family is good for — holding keys, granting access, being present for a delivery. Do not use them as your engineer.

3. The paperwork that only matters later

Warranties, invoices, test results and the distribution company file are worth little on the day and a great deal in year six. Overseas owners are disproportionately likely to end up without them, because nobody was in the room when they were handed over and the contractor moved on.

  • Original supplier invoices, in the supplier own name, dated and itemised. Not a summary someone typed.
  • Manufacturer warranty documents, with the expiry date of each item recorded somewhere you will find it.
  • Commissioning test results, including string-level generation figures and anti-islanding verification.
  • The as-built single-line diagram — as built, not as originally drawn. If the string layout changed on site, the drawing must follow.
  • Net metering or net billing application file and its approval correspondence.
  • Monitoring system access credentials in your own name, not your contractor's.

That last one catches people constantly. If the monitoring portal is registered to the installer, you cannot see your own plant when the relationship ends.

A sizing trap specific to overseas owners

If the house is empty or lightly occupied while you are abroad, its daytime consumption is very low — and since February 2026 exported units are bought back at roughly a third of the old rate. A system sized for the household you intend to have there, installed years before that household arrives, exports most of its generation cheaply in the meantime.

Sometimes the correct answer is a smaller system now, designed with the electrical infrastructure to expand later. That is a conversation worth having explicitly, because nobody selling you panels will raise it.

What a well-run remote project looks like

  1. A site visit and written load study before anything is quoted, with photographs sent to you.
  2. A design you approve remotely — SLD and model-specific bill of materials — before any equipment is purchased.
  3. Original invoices reaching you as they are issued, not at the end.
  4. Delivery verification against those invoices, photographed.
  5. Progress photographs at structure, DC termination and commissioning.
  6. A video walk-through at commissioning, and a handover pack with every document listed above.

None of that requires you to fly in. It does require one accountable technical person whose interests are not tied to what gets bought, which is what the one-stop delivery arrangement exists to provide — an engineer engaged separately from the supply chain rather than the supply chain policing itself.
