Distribution company: LESCO. Net metering and net billing applications for the city and its surrounding towns are filed here, and the documentation requirements are the ones I deal with most often.
Dominant load: Residential air conditioning, and it peaks in the afternoon — which is the single most important local fact for sizing. Cooling load tracks the generation curve closely, so a household that runs AC through the day is far better matched than the same house standing empty.
Building stock: Large new-build houses in the planned societies, typically with generous flat roof area and a parapet. Roof area is rarely the binding constraint here; daytime occupancy usually is.
Air quality and soiling: Lahore dust and winter smog are real generation factors. Soiling loss accumulates gradually enough to go unnoticed without monitoring, and winter smog reduces irradiance during the months output is already lowest.
Shading: The specifically Lahore problem is neighbouring plots. A clear roof today can be overshadowed by a taller house next door in two years, and in the planned societies that is a foreseeable risk rather than bad luck.

A great deal of solar in the planned societies is sold to households that are out from nine to five. Under the old net metering regime that hardly mattered — exported units offset imported ones at close to parity, so the grid behaved like a battery. Since February 2026 it does matter: exported units are bought back at roughly a third of the old rate.

So two identical houses in the same DHA phase, with the same roof and the same annual bill, can justify quite different systems. The one with someone home through the afternoon running air conditioning consumes what it generates. The one that is empty until evening exports most of it cheaply and buys it back expensively. Any quotation produced from your roof area rather than your occupancy has not asked the question that matters most here.

Smog, dust and what they actually cost you

Lahore has two distinct generation problems that most yield projections ignore. The first is soiling: dust accumulates on the glass and output drifts down slowly enough that nobody notices, because there is no day on which the system stops working. In a society still filling in, the empty plot beside you is a future house, and a house tall enough to shade your array through the middle of the day is a foreseeable outcome rather than an accident.

It is worth ten minutes at the assessment to look at what is not built yet and where the shadow would fall. Sometimes the answer is to shift the array a few metres, or to favour one roof section over another, at no additional cost — but only if somebody asked the question before the structure went up.
